My THEME for the A to Z challenge 2017 is an ongoing speculative fiction story featuring telepathy.

Each letter post is titled and inspired by a commonly misused word or phrase.

The story started with All Intents and Purposes.

One and the Same

Jolts of electricity stream through my body. It’s far worse than any scolding my mom has ever done. The pain is the difference between stubbing a toe and stepping on a land mine. I’m helpless as my attacker shoves me into the back of a van. He throws my bag at me. It lands on my gut, sending another wave of pain through me.

HELP! I’M BEING ABDUCTED! I scream from my mind. My parents, Mr. Bennett, and a few others hear me. They ask questions all at the same time, making it impossible to understand anything. Before I can answer, there’s a pinch on my arm. I spot the needle.

And for good measure, I hear my attacker think, then my head throbs as the world goes black.

Don’t be dead, don’t be dead, don’t be dead…

I wake up to the sound of a child’s whimper and repeated thought.

Don’t be dead, don’t be dead, don’t be dead…

“I’m not dead.” I try to sit up. Everything hurts. My eyes aren’t adjusting to the darkness. “Where are we? Why is it so dark?”

She cries, but it’s muffled. Her thoughts switch to hopes that I won’t hurt her.

I feel around in the dark. There’s a chain secured to my right leg, but the rest of my limbs are free. The floor under me is cold, hard, and uneven. The wall is the same. Maybe this is a cave? My clothing seems to be all in place, though the front pocket where my phone lives has been turned out.

“My name is Anah. What’s your’s?”

I remember, back when I was three or four, when my parents and I still lived in Arizona, there was a neighborhood Easter egg hunt. I found the last egg. Out under the desert heat, the hard-boiled egg was probably unsafe to eat. But I was too young to think about that. So, when my parents were distracted, I cracked it open and took a big bite. The graying yolk coated my mouth. I cried. Not amount of juice could get rid of that taste.

Right now, I wish the flavor in my mouth was only as bad as that rancid egg.

“I’m not going to hurt you.” Listening to her thoughts is breaking my heart. “I’m chained up. Are you?”

“It hurts,” she cries.

Crawling in the dark, I make my way to her. I stretch as far as the chain will let me go. Just enough to reach her elbow. I scream in my mind, asking if my parents can hear me.

“Hey, we’re going to be okay. Tell me your name.” If she’d even think her name, I could work with that.

“Ora. I want my mommy.” She thinks about the bad man. In her mind, he’s more monster than man. I watch her thoughts.

The sickening feeling is manageable. But the anger- I didn’t know I could feel this furious. I actually feel the place in my mind, the exact spot, where my newest power formed. The way that overeating makes the stomach feel, that’s how the spot in my mind feels. I don’t need a stun gun like he had.

She crawls closer. Her need for comfort is outweighing her fear that I’d hurt her. It’s not so much what I hear in her mind, it’s what I can feel. As if she’s projecting emotion.

I cradle her as best as I can with the restrictions of our chains. “Ora is a pretty name.” I think about the missing girl on the news. Could they be one and the same? “What’s your favorite book?”

She tells me about Alice in Wonderland while I again reach out with my mind. HELLO? CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?

  3. Hi J Lenni. Loved it. I really am a fan of first person present tense and it really suits your fast-paced story. I’ll be back to catch up and read some more. As I’m not doing the A-Z, I don’t get out much, LOL, but I’m back for the WEP. Posted early. Now I want to sit back and read!

Oh, favorite book? I have too many, but one I’ve been thinking about re reading is The Girl in Times Square by Paullina Simons. My favorite book of all time is Beach Music by Pat Conroy. I re read it every year and it does good things for my spirit. 🙂

  6. I’m catching up with posts today and I’m so glad I can go straight into reading the next chapter lol! The suspense would have been terrible hehe. All I can think is: how did they know about Anah? Did the teacher give her up – is that his purpose at the school? Next chapter, here I come!
