My THEME for the A to Z challenge 2017 is an ongoing speculative fiction story featuring telepathy.
Each letter post is titled and inspired by a commonly misused word or phrase.
The story started with All Intents and Purposes.
Ora falls asleep, but not for long. Or maybe it is a long time, and I don’t know. This is the trouble with uninterrupted darkness — it’s impossible to tell how much time has passed.
We’re both hungry. Her more than me, since she’s been here longer. That’s why I don’t complain, because I know everything here is worse for her. That, and it would do me no good. No one else is listening. We are alone in this darkness.
Makes the ending of that song a ridiculous choice. Whatever. It’s my favorite band, and I’m not singing Itsy Bitsy Spider. There might actually be spiders in here. Too bad there’s no water spout or rain. If this is the work of the HSMTF, they’ve got to be breaking laws by treating us this way.
I need to keep my mind off of the problems that I cannot solve. What’s that quote on the embroidery my mom made? Something about accepting what I cannot change, changing what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. I’ve felt around in the darkness for any possible escape method or even a way to get out of this chain. Nothing. Does that mean that being here is something I cannot change? It certainly feels that way.
“I need to go home.”
“Me too, Ora. Me too.” I hold her as best as I can, given our restraints. Crying will dehydrate her more. I have to think of a distraction. “How about if we write a letter to a fictional character? You said you like Alice in Wonderland. What would you write to Alice?”
She’s quiet for a little, though I hear her thoughts.
“I would rather write to the Cheshire Cat. He might think of a way out of here.”
To which fictional character would you write a letter?
