My THEME for the A to Z challenge 2017 is an ongoing speculative fiction story featuring telepathy.

Each letter post is titled and inspired by a commonly misused word or phrase.

The story started with All Intents and Purposes.

Scot Free

I pull the heavy coat on as a gust of wind whips me. As my eyes adjust to the lights, I see I was right about my location. This is a cave. Long, orange extension cords run along one wall, powering the light in this room. There’s a heavy, metal door that is now blocking the direction from which we came.

“The Homeland Security Mind Task Force isn’t going to get off scot free. Ora and I have rights.”

He laughs. “Those rights are for Americans.” He’s behind the light, in the shadow. I see a hand, large and somewhat wrinkled, reach for a white box. It’s a small cooler. He pulls out another bottle of that wonderful beverage and offers it to me. I reach down and take it, fumbling with the cap.

Only humans can be protected by the American rights you’re talking about. Maybe a few animals. Our kind has been reclassified. A dying tree in Oregon has more rights than you do.

He pictures an actual tree. A memory goes along with it, some protest about the tree being old and special.

That’s not what stops me cold; the open bottle held close enough for the dead skin of my lips to catch on the tamper evident band. I heard him. In my head, I heard him. And I see his thoughts, his memory.

“You’re…” You are like me. Like us. You’re one of us! You’re one of us?

Born and bred. An Eve Eight. The most powerful among us, until you two came along. When people pictured God, I’m what they saw.

He steps into the light.

Describe, in just a few words, what you picture when you picture God.
(*Belief is not relevant to this comment suggestion. There are people who do not believe in unicorns, yet can picture a horse-like creature with a horn growing from the head.)

I did think it was scott free, but not necessarily capitalizing the S and not making it one word. Thanks for the clarification. The captor is jealous of the powers of the Anah and Ora, what a creep! I want a happy ending but I kinda don’t want an ending 🙂 Going to be catching up with my alpha this weekend. I forgot how long it takes me to do my scrapbooking layouts and I had too many letters that weren’t ready 🙁

Yes I knew it was scot free and that it has nothing to do with scottish people. What do I picture when I picture god – hmmm – a golden light with an Adonis like man with a golden body – naked of course.

Thanks for the clarification of the word.
What do I picture to be God?

I suppose I see God as both male and female but the visual is a mix of color and not quite clear. I feel if we are in the “image of God” then this has to be. I do not think we would get one clear image and certainly not the Old Man stereotypical white dude who sits upon a golden throne.

I hope that drink isn’t blocking the girls’ powers.

Sadly I do tend to see the bearded old man in the clouds – more in the mold of Zeus from the Greek pantheon.

Oh my, that was a nice little twist you threw in there!

Like FinnBadger, I wondered if there’d be something in the drink. Only seven more letters to find out. Am excited :o)

That’s one arrogant captor. I hope they manage to get the better of him – they are more powerful after all.

What does scot free mean? I mean I know what it means and I use the term (though I can’t recall ever having used it in writing)- I’m wondering about the origin of the expression. Time to Google.

As far as picturing God goes…Morgan Freeman (as God in Bruce Almighty)

    Cool story!
When I picture God, so many pictures come to my mind- Lord Jagannath, Maa Lakshmi, Maa Durga, Lord Ganesh, Shri Krishna… In India, we have lakhs of Gods.
I see things & places & all the creations,& I think of the power that has created them. When I think deeply, I see light 🙂

How will the girls get the better of captor if he too can read minds, that will be interesting to read. What do I think of when I think God..A bright light. In India we believe God lives in each of us and hence there is no dearth of various forms of Gods, be it shapes, animals or human forms.

Intriguing read. What do I picture when I think of God? Light, spirit, joy that radiates warmth and love, comfort that ease over my mind and soul and knowing I’ve never been alone. Physically I tend to think more of light in body form that is almost too bright to look at and peace, laughter because I think God has a sense of humor so the entity is joyous and laughing which I can hear and feel. Then there is the general images of Jesus I think of sometimes but more vague surrounded by light depends on the day.

Ahha! 😀 Great cliffhanger. Monday needs to hurry up so we can read the next chapter already! I’m intrigued how they know Anah is an eve nine, I don’t think the parents would have slipped up so it must be the teacher somehow – maybe not intentionally after all. I can’t wait to read more! 🙂
