My THEME for the A to Z challenge 2017 is an ongoing speculative fiction story featuring telepathy.
Each letter post is titled and inspired by a commonly misused word or phrase.
The story started with All Intents and Purposes.
I pull the heavy coat on as a gust of wind whips me. As my eyes adjust to the lights, I see I was right about my location. This is a cave. Long, orange extension cords run along one wall, powering the light in this room. There’s a heavy, metal door that is now blocking the direction from which we came.
“The Homeland Security Mind Task Force isn’t going to get off scot free. Ora and I have rights.”
He laughs. “Those rights are for Americans.” He’s behind the light, in the shadow. I see a hand, large and somewhat wrinkled, reach for a white box. It’s a small cooler. He pulls out another bottle of that wonderful beverage and offers it to me. I reach down and take it, fumbling with the cap.
Only humans can be protected by the American rights you’re talking about. Maybe a few animals. Our kind has been reclassified. A dying tree in Oregon has more rights than you do.
He pictures an actual tree. A memory goes along with it, some protest about the tree being old and special.
That’s not what stops me cold; the open bottle held close enough for the dead skin of my lips to catch on the tamper evident band. I heard him. In my head, I heard him. And I see his thoughts, his memory.
“You’re…” You are like me. Like us. You’re one of us! You’re one of us?
Born and bred. An Eve Eight. The most powerful among us, until you two came along. When people pictured God, I’m what they saw.
He steps into the light.
Describe, in just a few words, what you picture when you picture God.
(*Belief is not relevant to this comment suggestion. There are people who do not believe in unicorns, yet can picture a horse-like creature with a horn growing from the head.)
