My THEME for the A to Z challenge 2017 is an ongoing speculative fiction story featuring telepathy.

Each letter post is titled and inspired by a commonly misused word or phrase.

The story started with All Intents and Purposes.

Curl Up in the Fetal Position

“Ora is a child, not a problem.” He laughs at my statement. “Of course you’d find that funny. You abduct children.”

I finish my drink and snuggle into the coat. He wasn’t kidding about freezing to death. “What’s going to happen now?”

“Maybe I’ll send you back in there. She stopped throwing herself against the wall when I added you.”

“Throwing herself… right. I saw her memories.” I move to stand behind my folding chair.

“She can create false memories. Her own, yours, anyone is subject to it. Ora is the reason the Homeland Security Task Force exists. She wanted to make her neighbor go away. Now he lives in constant fear.”

A tantrum. That can’t be true. “You’re making that up.”

“Am I? Does my great nephew seem happy to you? Unafraid?”

“How should I know?”

Images of Mr. Bennett pop into my mind. Him with moving boxes, him being interviewed for the English teacher job at my school, him crying while alone in the dark.

“I keep tabs on my family, even if they don’t want me to, or don’t know that I do.”

Thinking about Mr. Bennett being related to this guy twists my empty stomach into knots. He projects another memory into my mind. It’s my English class, as seen through binoculars peering into the window. I remember the day. We were supposed to write a journal entry about something that didn’t happen. It was an assignment I didn’t do in class. I just sat there, drawing circles. But I did write it… later, at home, in an old notebook. The entry was too embarrassing to share, especially with Mr. Bennett. I’d be utterly humiliated if he ever read it.

Is my abductor going to make me chose between Ora and Mr. Bennett? I curl up in the fetal position.

  1. Dire situation. Having to chose between two people we care about is always one of the worst happening in a character’s life.

  3. When I journaled, my entries were filled with things I wanted to happen (and which may or may not have eventuated), but I never made up anything…I save all my invention for my fiction.

  4. Oohh tough choice for Anah! I hope the “captor” isn’t really going to make her choose though, he seems to want to help Ora in the long run.

(I’m still really curious about the finger dial hehe I hope we find out if that’s a needed movement or not – or is this going to be book 1 of a series? *fingers crossed* 🙂 )
