Down the TBR Hole Week 5

Down The TBR hole meme

During the #GetSocial17 hop, I found a blog (thanks Amy of bursting with books) participating in Lia’s “Down the TBR Hole” meme.
From the Lost in a Story blog:

Most of you probably know this feeling, your Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when you’re scrolling through your list, you realize that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well, that’s going to change!

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Going through your tbr one-by-one makes you more aware of what’s on there. (Get excited again for books you forgot about.)

I’m going to combine this chore/ activity with the books on my Amazon Wishlist as well as my Goodreads TBR. I read an average of 50 books a year. Currently, it would take me about 6 years to read all the books on my Amazon wishlist of books and 17 years to get through my Goodreads TBR. That’s just not realistic, especially since there are bound to be new books I’ll also want to read!

Wanting to read a book and wanting to buy a book aren’t necessarily the same (which is one reason we have libraries). That’s why I’m judging each of these books for both my Amazon and Goodreads lists.

Vicious (Villains)
by V. E. Schwab
Added October 2, 2013

a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism

That’s why I added it.

#172 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Superhero
#176 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Superheroes
#1193 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Paranormal & Urban

And those are categories that I enjoy. Keeping this!

Stranger in a Strange Land (Remembering Tomorrow)
by Robert A. Heinlein
Added October 3, 2013

Valentine Michael Smith is a human being raised on Mars, newly returned to Earth. Among his people for the first time, he struggles to understand the social mores and prejudices of human nature that are so alien to him, while teaching them his own fundamental beliefs in grokking, watersharing, and love.

Still sounds interesting to me.

The Irresistible Offer: How to Sell Your Product or Service in 3 Seconds or Less
by Mark Joyner
Added October 6, 2013
4.1 out of 5 stars(127)

Your customers are going to give you three seconds to make the sale. Do you know what to say in those three seconds?

This still sounds interesting. On the other hand, I’m not sure that it’s related to selling books. Also… it’s a marketing book that I added four years ago, and it only has 127 reviews. Maybe this sounds a certain way, but wouldn’t a great marketing book at the very least have a high number of sales?
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #196,210 Paid in Kindle Store
#308 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Business & Money > Marketing & Sales > Sales & Selling
#648 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Business & Money > Marketing & Sales > Marketing
#760 in Books > Business & Money > Marketing & Sales > Sales & Selling

I Kissed a Ghost
by Robin Leigh Morgan
Currently unavailable.
Added October 11, 2013

I searched. This doesn’t exist anymore. The author doesn’t come up on Goodreads.

The Luminaries (Man Booker Prize)
by Eleanor Catton
Added October 15, 2013

Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, THE LUMINARIES is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement.

It still seems interesting. But at 849 pages, if it isn’t SFF, I’m probably not going to get around to it in the next two decades.

The Mythic Guide to Characters: Writing Characters Who Enchant and Inspire
by del Drago, Antonio, Derek Bowen
Added November 14, 2013

After reading the reviews, I feel that this book is aimed at writers with less experience.

Crazy, Stupid Sex (Harlequin Cosmo Red-Hot Reads Collection)
by Maisey Yates
Added January 24, 2014

So she does what any self-respecting geek-girl looking to get laid would do: she programs her own app for landing a hot guy. After a few failed attempts at making contact, beta testing leads her to Caleb Anderson. Caleb is used to female attention, but finds himself attracted to Evie because of her unique brand of awkward.

At first, I had no idea why I added this. Then I read the description. It sounds hilarious.

How to Blog a Book: Write, Publish, and Promote Your Work One Post at a Time
by Nina Amir, Christina Katz
Added February 1, 2014

*I found out there’s a new version. So I deleted the old one and added the new one.

Nina Amir explains how writing a book in cyberspace allows you to get your book written easily, while promoting it and building an author’s platform. It’s a fun, effective way to start writing, publishing, and promoting a book, one post at a time.

That sounds like something I’d want to try. Perhaps next year?

Oh no… looking this up me want another book by the same author!!!

Diego’s Dragon, Book One: Spirits of the Sun
by Kevin Gerard
Added February 23, 2014

It still sounds like a good book. But honestly, I don’t read children’s books all that often. (Except when I’m on “Uncle J duty.”)

Words that Sell: More than 6000 Entries to Help You Promote Your Products, Services, and Ideas
by Richard Bayan
Added February 27, 2014

I’m not sure that this book is actually about selling books. It seems geared more toward small business.

Judgement 10:

AWL: Removed | Goodreads TBR: (wasn’t there)

Have you read any of these books? Do you have unavailable books on your wishlist or tbr?
What marketing book for authors would you recommend?

Tune in next Monday to watch as I fall even fruther…

Good choice to keep Vicious. It’s so good. Also, at the last author event I attended, Schwab told us that there’s a forthcoming sequel, which is very exciting.
