Down the TBR Hole Week 11

Down The TBR hole meme

During the #GetSocial17 hop, I found a blog (thanks Amy of bursting with books) participating in Lia’s “Down the TBR Hole” meme.
From the Lost in a Story blog:

Most of you probably know this feeling, your Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when you’re scrolling through your list, you realize that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well, that’s going to change!

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Going through your tbr one-by-one makes you more aware of what’s on there. (Get excited again for books you forgot about.)

I’m going to combine this chore/ activity with the books on my Amazon Wishlist as well as my Goodreads TBR. I read an average of 50 books a year. Currently, it would take me about 6 years to read all the books on my Amazon wishlist of books and 17 years to get through my Goodreads TBR. That’s just not realistic, especially since there are bound to be new books I’ll also want to read!

Wanting to read a book and wanting to buy a book aren’t necessarily the same (which is one reason we have libraries). That’s why I’m judging each of these books for both my Amazon and Goodreads lists.

line break

Effigy (The Coileáin Chronicles Book 1)
by M.J. Fifield
Item added November 19, 2014

Her journey leads to a deceiving world of magic, monsters, and gods she never believed existed outside of myth.

Seems like an epic fantasy with a great cover. Pretty sure I’d enjoy this book.

AWL: Kept | Goodreads TBR: Added

Wicked as They Come (A Blud Novel Series Book 1)
by Delilah S. Dawson
Item added November 30, 2014

I read “The Mysterious Madam Morpho (Blud, #1.5)” long ago. It was the first steampunk I ever read. But reading it made me think, “hey, maybe reading the first one so I have an idea of what’s going on/ who these characters are, would be useful.”

And that’s why it’s on the list.

Million Dollar Outlines (Million Dollar Writing Series)
by David Farland
Item added December 3, 2014

I’m on the fence here. The low-ratings seem to be from people who point out that this isn’t about “how to write an outline.” Okay, fine.
The description is basically name dropping. I think this is for people who feel they are missing something from the book they’re writing or about to write.

Judgement 3:

AWL: Removed | Goodreads TBR: (wasn’t there)

Brave New World
by Aldous Huxley
Item added December 3, 2014

I don’t know what the book is about. I know what a bunch of reviewers think of it. I have no idea why I was interested.

Judgement 4:

AWL: Removed | Goodreads TBR: (wasn’t there)

Little Miss Evil
by Bryce Leung, Kristy Shen
Item added December 12, 2014

It sounds hilarious! Like a book about the kids from Despicable Me.

Judgement 5:

AWL: Kept | Goodreads TBR: Kept

Dream of the Red Chamber (Illustrated) Book I
by Cao XueQin, H. Bencraft Joly
Item added December 12, 2014

I was probably looking for Chinese Literature.

Judgement 6:

AWL: Removed | Goodreads TBR: (wasn’t there)

His to Take (Wicked Lovers series Book 9)
by Shayla Black
Item added December 21, 2014

Book NINE??? There are, actually, 12 books that come before this. Wow… I am not starting in the middle.

Judgement 7:

AWL: Removed | Goodreads TBR: (wasn’t there)

A Curious History of Food and Drink
by Ian Crofton
Item added December 28, 2014

These sort of books are great for world building. I love these.

Judgement 8:

AWL: Kept (switched to Kindle edition instead of hardcover) | Goodreads TBR: Kept Removed Added (wasn’t there)

The Magicians: A Novel
by Lev Grossman
Item added December 30, 2014

I’ve seen some of the show. Assuming the book and show have anything in common, I’m in. Just added the whole series because, honesty, it’s the college version of Hogwarts in America. Boom goes the adult Harry Potter dynamite!

Judgement 9:

AWL: Kept (and added the box set) | Goodreads TBR: Added

Can’t Look Back (War for Dominance Book 1)
by Chris Kennedy
Item added January 11, 2015

It sounds like it might be interesting. But there are other books I want to read more.

Judgement 10:

Have you read any of these books?

Anna of Herding Cats & Burning Soup asked “What thing in books causes instant *grabby hands* for you?”

Tune in next Monday to watch as I fall even fruther…

Down The TBR hole

  1. I thought about your answer to the question about what makes you want to grab a book. I’m such a moody creature that I’d have a different answer, depending on what I felt like while choosing. Just last week, I read two “cozy mysteries” because I needed to hide from the world. This week I’m into The Mother Tongue: English and How it Got That Way. And if this mood lasts into next week, I’m diving into Unfair, The New Science of Criminal Injustice. Great question BTW.

  2. Another interesting mix. Isn’t Brave New World one of the first ever dystopians? Always meant to read it…
